ACHIEVEMENT DEPENDS ON PROVEN CONCEPTS & METHODOLOGY
~ Concepts of Southern Wild Camping ~
Most Outdoor Recreationists (Hikers, Backpackers, etc.) enjoy the Outdoors only along a predetermined established path/trail moving from Point A to Point B. What is missed along the way? What is beyond the trail & off the beaten path? The concept of uncharted exploration drives us to true curiousity & adventure.
The Southern Wild Camp experience combines Research, Information, Documentation, Transportation Routing, Planning, Prepping, E-Scouting, Mapping, Safety, Terrain Navigation, Site Suitability, Self-Sustainability & Mental/Physical Prowess.
Adapting/Learning the "Wilderness Mindset" approach - slowing down, self-awareness, stillness, sensory acuity, observational keeness - traits & skills only a solitary experience can sharpen. Become confident while exploring & navigating off-trail wilderness areas.
Wild Camping also encompasses Primitive Ethics, Woodsmanship & Survival skills rarely used today.
~ Wild Camping Methodology ~
1. Lawful Land Recreation.
2. Contiguous Wilderness.
3. Road/Trail Access Systems.
4. Mature Hardwood Delineation.
5. Water Sources.
6. Streamside Management Zones.
7. Topography.
8. Terrain Features & Landforms.
9. Vegetation Profiling.
10. 1k Yards or Less.
~ Wild Camping's Two Main Pillars ~
Utilizing Online Web Mapping Solutions to “Scout/Analyze” surface terrain suitable for possible wild camp locations.
Having knowledge, skills & abilities in Photo Aerial Interpretation E-Scouting is the key to success.
This step is an educated hypothesis for possible suitable areas of interest (AOIs) for wild campsite locations based on terrain features & accessibility routes. Currently achieving an 80-85% success rate using Forestry & Geospatial principles, practices & techniques (PPTs).
Infield RECON/Survey exercise that will validate or invalidate your E-Scouting hypothesis.
Used to establish "Parking, Ingress/Egress, Check Points & Wild Camp Points of interest.
Combination of a physical map & compass, the use of GPS or Mobile Devices are needed for field recon & validation for wild camps.
A Mapping Application with the ability to record tracks & waypoints are needed for field recon/surveys (ie. onXmaps, AllTrails, Gaia, Locus Map, CalTOPO to name a few).
