Elm Bottom Camp is a great solitary wild camp for a quick overnighter or weekend getaway. Due to its proximity to the Hamp Smith Road WAT Trailhead (350 yards), it can be used as a base camp for hiking the WAT. Parking is off FS RD 273/Messina/Hamp Smith Road. The access point is located directly behind the parking point

Wild camp is just down a ridge leading to an open hardwood bottom. Terrain navigation is generally flat on a small finger ridge of mixed pine/hardwoods. Elm Bottom Camp has a difficulty rating of "Easy.

The campsite can accommodate 3-5 shelters and many hammocks. The hike-in from the access point to the wild campsite center is 436 yards. The water source is Castor Creek, which was nearly non-existent and stagnant - bring your own water. Waypoint coordinates and location bearings are included in the Wild Camp Report.
