Wild Camp KRD #1 Watermelon Pond
Watermelon Pond Camp is the first wild campsite I have located in the Kisatchie National Forest and one of the best beginner campsites to start with. It has an "Easy" difficulty rating due to its location from a main highway, flat ground, short hiking distance, optimal parking off of FSRD 370, and overall great "park-like" setting at wild camp center. It is strongly prohibited to camp on the field area at the parking spots .There is an old farm pond from days gone by just next to your wild campsite that does hold water (be careful of the downed barbed wire around it) . This site holds beautiful mature hardwoods and upland pine habitat and is excellent for exploring further. The Starting Point is a mid-sized mature Pine tree just off the roadside.
The campsite can accommodate up to 5 shelters. The Hike in from the starting point to wild campsite center is 155 yards. Waypoint coordinates and location bearings are included in the Wild Camp Report.
